Position: Data & Communications Internship

Reporting to: Senior Program Manager
Hours: Minimum 80 hours
Timeline: November 2024 –February 2025, 1-2 days per week. (Hours are flexible, however interns must be available during working hours for communication with team)

We are seeking a motivated intern to assist with the development of key environmental monitoring methods and reporting tasks aimed at supporting wetlands, coastal and marine ecosystem conservation efforts. You will provide support in the description of a method for assessing crab abundance and diversity in mangrove ecosystems, which will be critical for citizen science data collection. In addition, you’ll contribute to several ongoing projects, including analyzing data for the MangroveWatch program and assisting in the preparation of a major report on the health and recovery of the Great Barrier Reef. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in ecological research, data analysis, and environmental reporting, all while helping deliver crucial outputs for our program partners and funders.
Responsibilities:
Primary task
Assist with the write up of the “Crab-EI” method and creation of the associated methods video – Description of the method to carry out the assessment of crab abundance, diversity and activity in local mangrove forests. Trail cameras will be used to monitor crab activity; the method needs to be described, written up and a methodology video created for delivery to our partners for use in the field
Secondary task
Assist with management of data collected from our Northern Queensland MangroveWatch Program, in the following ways:

S-VAM (Shoreline Video Assessment Method) – Image and video analysis to determine the threats, values and health of local tidal wetland shoreline habitats;

Mangrove forest Long Plots – Data validation and analysis to determine the health, diversity and carbon storage capabilities of local mangrove forests;

Saltmarsh SAVER (Subjective Assessment of Values of the Ecosystem and Risks) Surveys – Data validation and analysis to determine the health, threats and values of local saltmarsh ecosystems.
Assist with Recovery of the Great Barrier Reef reporting – help to translate technical scientific reports into public facing documents. For more information on the Recovery of the Great Barrier Reef program see: Recovery of the Great Barrier Reef (earthwatch.org.au)
