Through the delivery of a suite of programs across Australia, we identified a gap in what is available to young people who are no longer in formal education and yet are still eager to build their environmental knowledge and take practical action in their communities. This gap is even wider for young people who are experiencing marginalisation due to their geographic location and/or economic circumstances.
With the support of VFFF, we created the "Agents of Change for the Environment (ACE)" program to support and empower young people to pursue their passion for the environment by developing their knowledge and undertaking on-ground citizen science and environmental action projects in their own communities. In the year ahead, Earthwatch Australia will focus on collaborating with local environmental partners in three specific hubs: the Newcastle and Hunter Valley region, Far North Queensland, and the southeast coast of New South Wales as part of the first stage of the program’s roll-out.
"The focus of the Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation is all about backing young people. We know that young people are eager to take action to care for Australia’s precious environment but often lack the resources and encouragement to do so. We are delighted to support Earthwatch’s Agents of Change for the Environment program and know it will support the young people engaged in the program to turn their concerns about the environment into practical action."
- Jenny Wheatley, Chief Executive Officer, Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation
