Applications are now open as 250 Queensland students celebrate a year of hands-on water education and environmental action.
Thursday 22 October 2026: More than 250 primary school students from across South-East Queensland gathered at Goodna State School for Queensland's largest Mizuiku Nature & Water School event to date, as applications officially open for schools to participate in the 2027 program.Â
Originating in Japan in 2004 and now operating across nine countries, Mizuiku is Suntory Group's global water education program, designed to help children understand, value and protect water through hands-on learning and connection with nature.Â
Delivered by Earthwatch in Australia, the annual Kids Teaching Kids event marks the culmination of a year of learning for participating schools, bringing together students to share environmental projects, exchange ideas and inspire one another to take action for healthier waterways and more sustainable communities.Â
The event represents a significant milestone for the program, which has expanded its reach in its second year. Through curriculum-aligned classroom resources, outdoor learning experiences and teacher professional development, Mizuiku helps students explore the natural water cycle, water conservation and the connection between healthy ecosystems and secure water resources.Â
"We have been incredibly encouraged by the enthusiasm shown by students and teachers since launching Mizuiku in Australia," said Fiona Sutton Wilson, CEO of Earthwatch Australia.Â
"The program empowers young people to become environmental leaders in their own communities, and today's event is a wonderful opportunity for students to share what they've learned while inspiring others to take action to protect our waterways." Concludes Sutton Wilson. Â
Sophie Lodge, Corporate Affairs Director at Suntory Oceania, said the growing interest in the program highlights the importance of helping young Australians understand the value of water.Â
"Suntory's respect for water has been at the heart of our business for more than 125 years," she said.Â
"As a company sustained by the gifts of nature and water, we believe healthy waterways are essential to thriving communities. Through the Mizuiku water education program, we're helping young people build a deeper understanding of water to inspire the next generation."
The Mizuiku Nature & Water School Program is part of Mizu Mirai (Water Future), Suntory Oceania's signature water stewardship platform. Guided by the company’s Growing for Good philosophy, Mizu Mirai also encompasses a scientific research partnership with Griffith University and the commitment to replenishing the water used at its Ipswich facility.
