Day 4 | Tanya Charsley | Esperance Primary School

This morning I headed west to Stokes Inlet National Park, with the true bug team Nick and Gerry. While there were not many insects of interest to the team, it was good to learn and practice the “bush bashing” technique for collecting specimens (check out the video!). It was also great chatting to Gerry and Nick about their adventures in the field, they have searched for insects all over the world. From the jungles of the Amazon to the highlands of New Guinea and everywhere in-between, no insect is safe from their nets and pooters! It is believed that only 30% of insects have been formally identified, and West Australia is unique in that we have so many species found nowhere else in the world. So, for any kids out there that want to discover their own species new to science, Entomology is the way to go!
