What is a research expedition with Earthwatch?

An Earthwatch expedition is a unique eco-travel experience where you explore wild places while contributing to real conservation work. As a citizen scientist, you will assist researchers in studying ecosystems, tracking wildlife, and collecting data to protect biodiversity and combat climate change. Whether in rainforests, oceans, or savannas, your hands-on efforts support critical scientific research and help preserve endangered species. It is meaningful, educational travel with a purpose.

Julie’s Story: A Life-Changing Expedition Tracking Turtles in the Bahamas

In September 2018, Julie and her friends joined a life-changing Earthwatch expedition on Andros Island, Bahamas, tracking turtles in their natural habitat.

It was Julie's first time joining an Earthwatch expedition, and she described the experience as "amazing, fun, while helping science!", especially being surrounded by the beauty of the Bahamas while contributing to meaningful conservation research. They participated in every single step throughout the research, from boat trips to hands-on fieldwork, catching, weighing, and caring for turtles; they immersed themselves in the scientific investigation.

“Amazing, fun, while helping science!"

Julie says she felt completely safe and comfortable during the outdoor activities, and strongly recommends Earthwatch expeditions for first-time solo travellers and solo female travellers. The team’s support and the well-organised setup helped her focus on learning and enjoying every moment.

Immersed in the natural beauty of the Bahamas, the trip deepened Julie’s environmental awareness and her role in protecting it. The experience sparked a lasting connection that even years later, Julie and her tripmates still exchange turtle-themed birthday cards each year!. Julie now follows turtle news closely and cares more deeply about their threats and habitats. She highly recommends expedition-style travel to anybody looking for a different and unique experience.
