The perfect match of climate science and Traditional Knowledge to Build Climate Forecasting Expertise and Community

2025 has proved a year of achievement for ClimateWatch Vanuatu with an impressive list of accomplishments that enhanced and improved verified capacity and partnerships with communities, schools and government agencies. The success of ClimateWatch Vanuatu is growing local climate resilience and indigenous adaptation.

Data capacity co-operation with the VMGD continued to grow in 2025, with over 800 ClimateWatch data points collected and collated directly into national climate and cyclone forecasting tools used by the VMGD. Long-term weather forecasting effectiveness was further strengthened by parallel investment in data validation systems and integration with VanKIRAP’s Traditional Knowledge database. 

ClimateWatch Vanuatu 2025 also saw a significant education investment. Curriculum resources were piloted in two Tanna schools, integrating Traditional Knowledge with phenology monitoring. Students collected weekly species data, collaborated with Elders and presented their research projects. The project has since been endorsed by Vanuatu’s Ministry of Education for national adoption, embedding climate literacy across its school system. 

The achievements of ClimateWatch Vanuatu 2025 demonstrate the value and strong return on donor contributions, expanding local leadership, improving national forecasting capability and establishing sustainable systems to drive Vanuatu’s climate resilience well beyond the formal limits of our project lifecycle.
