Climate change presents an urgent and escalating threat to both human communities and natural ecosystems across the Pacific region. In Vanuatu, these impacts are already being felt through rising sea levels, shifting weather patterns, and the increased frequency of extreme weather events. To address these challenges, Earthwatch Australia has partnered with the Vanuatu Meteorological and Geohazards Department (VMGD) to establish ClimateWatch Vanuatu—a forward-looking initiative that integrates Traditional Knowledge with modern meteorological forecasting to strengthen climate resilience and accurate climate prediction system.
Expanding Reach and Impact
In 2024, ClimateWatch Vanuatu experienced significant growth and adoption, demonstrating its potential as a powerful climate resilience tool. Since its launch, the program has trained over 100 individuals, including 20 teachers, on how to use and teach the ClimateWatch app. With more than 69 active users, the app has facilitated the collection of over 160 critical data points by local community members. These observations are essential for improving Vanuatu’s weather forecasting capabilities and strengthening its Traditional Knowledge databases.
Since its inception, ClimateWatch Vanuatu has demonstrated considerable growth and early success. In 2024, the program significantly expanded its reach, training more than 100 individuals, including 20 educators equipped to embed climate science into classrooms. This training empowers local communities to contribute to climate data collection and education, embedding climate science into everyday learning and decision-making.
The initiative now supports over 69 active users who have collectively submitted more than 160 phenological observations—critical data points that inform weather forecasting and bolster local climate knowledge systems. These community-sourced records not only enhance the accuracy of climate predictions but also contribute to the preservation and integration of Traditional Knowledge.
A Scalable Model for the Pacific
The success of ClimateWatch Vanuatu underscores its potential as a replicable model for other Pacific Island nations. By combining community engagement with scientific tools, the program bridges local insights and contemporary science to build more robust, locally appropriate climate adaptation strategies.
However, to scale and sustain this work, continued investment and collaboration are essential. Earthwatch Australia is actively seeking partnerships with donors and institutions committed to supporting community-led climate resilience in the Pacific.
By investing in ClimateWatch Vanuatu, partners can play a vital role in strengthening climate adaptation capacity—not only in Vanuatu but across the broader region.
