Mitsubishi Development
Mitsubishi Development and Earthwatch Australia have partnered to deliver a $450,000 research program called ‘Understanding Queensland’s Blue Carbon Resource’. This partnership was established to assess the condition of wetlands and prove their value in mitigating climate change.
By collecting data in wetlands from Mackay to the Daintree, scientists are measuring the capacity of mangroves to store and sequester carbon emissions over three years and to understand the impact of wetland health on carbon sequestration. This adds to...

Earthwatch Australia is funded by CCAF to deliver a first-of-its-kind marine pollution and wetland management program in the Lower Gulf of Carpentaria. Together with Carpentaria Land Council Aboriginal Corporation (CLCAC) and recycling experts Plastic Collective, Earthwatch will train 20 CLCAC Indigenous Land and Environment Rangers and 30 community volunteers to help deliver the Wetlands not Wastelands program over three years from 2020 onwards.
Driven by science and delivered by the local...

The Great Barrier Reef, the largest living organism on the planet, is facing annihilation due to a culmination of factors including rising see temperatures, disease, acidification, crown of thorns and now macroalgae. Recovery of the Great Barrier Reef is a partnership between Earthwatch Australia, James Cook University, and sponsored by Mitsubishi Corporation’s Global Coral Reef Conservation Project, to provide scientifically robust ways to help reefs recover in the wake of the increasing ecological disturbances they are facing. This program...

Amcor
The partnership with Amcor was established in 2001. The collaboration focuses on marine debris, a global problem about which not enough is known. Amcor saw an opportunity to contribute to increasing the data available to help understand what drives this complex issue. Earthwatch worked with scientists to create a bespoke program for Amcor staff, where they spend two weeks volunteering and contributing to marine debris research in various hotspots around the world.
Participants note that the expedition has changed their lives personally and professionally...

Impact Report
2022
2022 marked another year of important environmental action to restore our iconic landscapes, protect our biodiverse ecosystems and prioritise climate action. In our 40th year, we have continued to deliver scientific programs across the country at pace, and have even begun to extend our work globally through critical UN discussions around climate change and biodiversity loss. In the 2022 Impact report, we have collected case studies, highlights and key results from the year to share with our valued community and...

2020-2021
2020 and 2021 represent a tumultuous time for society and the environment. The pandemic has upended our ways of working and living, and extreme weather events bring us daily reminders that we are already living with the consequences of a warming planet.
However, Earthwatch has not slowed down its mission to empower people to save the natural world. In the past two years, we have:
Hosted over 6,000 participants in our programs and expeditions,
Enabled participants, Fellows and workshop attendees contribute...
